Two separate wildfires sparked in Nassau County last week.
The first ignited in a marsh near the Nassau River and Interstate 95 Aug. 13. According to a social media post made by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office, the fire started after the marsh was struck by lightning.
Florida Forest Service Wildfire Mitigation Specialist and Public Information Officer Robert Chase said the fire broke out at 4:12 p.m., affecting 140 acres of state land in Four Creeks State Forest. As of Friday, at 7:57 a.m., the fire was declared 100% controlled.
“We will only use the word ‘controlled’ when the fire has been closed out, meaning the fire is 100% contained, no active flame, smoke, or heat is present,” Chase said.
FFS used two tractor-plow units and one type-VI engine to help control the burn. No injuries or property damage occurred.
The second wildfire sparked Thursday at noon in Bryceville, near the Brandy Branch swamp. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The fire burned 1 acre on private property and was fully contained by Friday. One tractor-plow unit was used to control the flames, and no injuries or property damage occurred.
