Two wildfires broke out in Hilliard over the weekend.
The first wildfire ignited Friday afternoon off Rowe Road, consuming approximately 128 acres of land. The cause remains under investigation, said Michelle Maylon, forestry supervisor II and public information officer for the Florida Forest Service Jacksonville District.
Nassau County Fire Rescue initially spotted the fire that later involved multiple agencies, including the FFS, the Florida Highway Patrol, and the Nassau County Road Department. No injuries or structural damage were reported, and the fire has been 100% contained.
A second wildfire sparked Saturday afternoon as the Buford Bay fire near Bay Road. As of Tuesday, before the Record went to press, the fire had burned about 30 acres and was 75% contained, Maylon said.
The FFS detected the fire and is leading suppression efforts while the FHP and the Nassau County Road Department are working to alert drivers to potential smoke and road hazards in the area.
No injuries or property damage have been reported in connection with the fire. Both incidents occurred on private property.
