Engines aren’t the only things revving up for Katelyn’s Ride for Autism. As the Conner family prepares for the 13th annual event, Katelyn’s mom Mandy Conner, says one special moment will take center stage before the golf cart poker run begins.
“This year, Katelyn will share her graduation with the audience during our opening ceremony,” she said. “It’s a sensory-friendly graduation surrounded by family, friends, and community, and we couldn’t be more proud to share that moment with everyone.”
This milestone comes full circle for the Conner family, who started the ride when Katelyn was in kindergarten. The event was inspired by the family’s own journey after their daughter, Katelyn, was diagnosed with autism when she was 2 years old. The event spreads awareness and brings a sense of closeness.
“We have to keep showing up, keep trying, and keep giving our children opportunities to experience the world. And when we do that together, it changes everything,” Conner said. “Katelyn’s Ride is a big part of building that community and reminding families that they are supported.”
This year’s theme reflects a favorite among the autism community.
“We knew NASCAR had to be at the top of the list, because so many children with autism are drawn to cars,” Conner said.
The shirts for the racing-themed event incorporate 13 race cars symbolizing the 13th year. The cars on the shirt are lined up in the way many kids on the spectrum play with cars.
“Each car features a number tied to autism statistics both locally and nationally,” Conner said. “For example, one car highlights that 1-in-31 children are diagnosed with autism.”
The Arc Nassau hosts Katelyn’s Ride and will donate 20% of T-shirt sales to the Nassau County School District ESE Department. The rest of the funds raised will benefit The Arc and its programs that serve local families. Beginning May 1, families can apply for the Support For All grant that helps cover summer camp, communication devices, sensory equipment, respite care, and therapy services.
The ride will begin on Conner Road in Hilliard April 18 with a 10 a.m. line-up. Registration for the golf cart poker run closes April 15 at midnight with a $75 entry fee.
“Participants can expect a full day of family-friendly fun, connection, and excitement,” Conner said.
There will be a variety of local food options, including Ruby’s Waffles and Ice Cream Bar, Krackers Boiled Peanuts, Zaxby’s, and H&S Shrimp. Entertainment will include a mini market with local vendors, a car show, a rock-climbing wall, bounce houses, Just Axing, and live local musicians.
New this year is an expanded golf cart route.
“Participants will now ride through the back pastures of Conner’s A-Maize-ing Acres, an area most people only see during the fall corn maze season,” Conner said.
Katelyn’s Ride moved to Hilliard last year and the support of the community followed.
“Our community shows up and shows out every single year. The support from local businesses, volunteers, and families is truly what makes this event possible,” Conner said. “We plan to continue growing the ride in Hilliard and expanding our golf cart community. With the space and support we have, we’re excited to welcome even more families each year.”
The Conner family plans to spearhead this event for many years to come, making everyone feel included.
“Our goal is to keep this a meaningful, family-friendly event where people can come together, have fun, and feel a true sense of belonging,” Conner said.
“One thing I always say on my podcast, www.talkinautism.com is, ‘It doesn’t get easier; we just get better at it.’”
