Team Splash brings Special Olympics swimming to Hilliard. The Area 4 team has new coaches on deck and a dedicated team of community volunteers.
The team held its first practice at the Town of Hilliard’s pool Monday.
“We are excited to bring this incredible opportunity to the West Side of Nassau County, offering athletes a chance to socialize, stay active, and grow together as a team,” Coach Mandy Conner said. “Special Olympics swimming is open to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities aged 8 and older.”
Athletes of all swim levels are welcome. They do not have to know how to swim in order to participate. Protective vests will be worn unless the athletes are cleared by coaches.
“There is truly a category for everyone, from the assisted floating division for our less mobile athletes to advanced swimmers competing in distance events. In fact, one of our own athletes will be training in the mile swim category – an incredible accomplishment, and we can’t wait to cheer him on in competition,” Conner said.
The inclusive swimming program also welcomes peers without delays to join in the fun. Conner said they will help to promote friendship, acceptance, and community connection.
“It’s also a great opportunity for teens looking to earn community service hours while making a real difference,” she noted.
Practices are July 14, 21, and 28 and Aug. 4. Scheduled meets are July 26, Aug. 9 and Sept. 26-27.
