FPL representatives delivered meal kits to senior citizens June 18.
The Westside Senior Center in Hilliard hosted the event, with Nassau County Council on Aging representatives assisting.
The meal kits are in preparation for hurricane season. Each box included water and nonperishable foods that could feed a person for a three-day period. State officials recommend each resident keeps a hurricane supply kit that includes three days of food in the event that homes lose power due to hurricanes and tropical storms. The Atlantic Hurricane Season began June 1 and ends Nov. 30.
It was an all hands on deck operation as employees and volunteers from FPL and the Council on Aging worked together to unload boxes off a pallet. They then labeled 450 meal kits and put them in reusable FPL bags to distribute to 150 seniors.
Along with their meal kits, the seniors received hurricane preparation guides full of safety tips.
FPL and the Council on Aging have partnered in previous years as well, ensuring seniors in the communities FPL serves receive vital supplies so that they are storm ready. Senior citizens may not be able to leave their homes or receive home-delivered meals after a storm.
The utility company’s mission to deliver hurricane kits via community nonprofit organizations began in 2016. Since then, thousands of hurricane kits have been delivered to senior citizens. Visit FPL.com/storm for more information on how customers can prepare, including tips, checklists and more.
