The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners hosted a Bryceville community event Friday, sharing information about current and future road work.
County staff provided updates on the County Road 121 improvements, the Vision 2050 plan, and capital projects.
According to a graphic provided by county staff at the meeting,
The County Road 121 project began in the fall, with construction expected to conclude by spring 2027.
The road work currently happening on County Road 121 is the first closure of the project. The stretch of road being worked on is about a mile long and is planned to last 120 days. County staff recommends residents take the Horseshoe Circle detour around the construction.
The second complete road closure will take place on County Road 121 between Stokes Road and County Road 119. For this closure, county staff recommend a few different routes to help residents get where they are going. For those going to Baldwin, they suggest traveling from County Road 121 to County Road 119, then turning onto U.S. 301. A similar route is suggested to those traveling to Jacksonville, except after turning onto U.S. 301, they would then turn onto Otis Road. For residents traveling to Macclenny, take County Road 121 to Stokes Road, then turn onto State Road 121.
Those overseeing the road work were also able to explain what is happening to the road, which is causing the closure.
“So, we’re gonna come in here and tear (the current road) out, remix, and then have 6 inches of asphalt for the base, and then 3 inches of asphalt for your main travelers,” WSB Project Administrator Alan Floyd said. “So, it’s gonna be a whole lot better than what you have out here now.”
All changes in traffic patterns, including road closures, will be published two weeks prior to the road work through local newspapers, including the Nassau County Record, and also on the Nassau County, FL Facebook page, and www.thecountyinsider.com.
At the public meeting, graphics showed current demographics and shared community input about the Nassau County Vision 2050 plan.
Nassau County’s population is 100,763, making up 40,209 households. Highest traffic volumes occur on Interstate 95, State Road 200, County Road 115, and U.S. 301. The county is responsible for maintaining 437 miles of road, with crash hot spots primarily occurring on state roads.
Residents said strengths of the county include the small-town feel, natural resources and beauty, availability of services, and a great place to raise a family. Some of the weaknesses include a lack of housing at an attainable price, a lack of availability of high-wage or skilled labor jobs, and a lack of balanced growth.
Also presented at the meeting were current and future road projects for Districts 4 and 5. Road work done in 2025 and 2026 include Eastwood Drive, Cortez Road, in Bryceville and in Callahan, Hart Terrace, Rose Street, Wilbur Jones Road, and Owls Nest Court.
