Callahan will eventually run on Dunkin’ as the site plan was approved by the Callahan Town Council Monday night.
Project developer Kevin Patel presented plans for the property at 542547 U.S. 1. Patel said the primary building will house Dunkin’ Donuts, with a second building planned for a future chain food store. While no franchise has been selected, the utilities and paving will be completed during the initial construction to allow for a future buildout once a tenant is identified.
During the item’s public hearing, two residents spoke about what the new franchise will do to local coffee stores.
“I’m thinking on the side of corporation versus local business,” Ty Wainwright said. “We have three coffee shops now because of Ellianos that are sort of local. It just feels wrong that we should add another big corporation to take away from (small businesses) just because we want a Dunkin’.”
Chris Paulson echoed those concerns, urging the council to carefully consider how local businesses could be affected.
Before unanimously approving the site plan, council members clarified that the matter before them was limited to whether the project met planning and zoning requirements. Officials stated that the proposal complies with current land development codes.
The next council meeting will be held March 16 at 7 p.m.
