Three resignations and four new hires were announced during the Hilliard Town Council meeting Thursday night.
Administrative assistant Elise Earnest resigned Oct. 2 from her position with the town and administrative assistant Jennifer Cone resigned Oct. 8. Both resignations were approved by the council. Planning and Zoning Board Chair Wendy Prather resigned from the board effective Oct. 15, which was also approved by the council.
Prather was then hired at the meeting to fill the town hall administrative financial analyst position. In order to be a town employee, she had to resign from her seat on the board.
Along with Prather, Heidi Irre and Teresa Fedick were also hired to fill vacant town hall administrative assistant positions.
“It’s the same pay rate as the previous person in that position was being paid,” Town Clerk Lisa Purvis said.
Retired town employee Myra Cockerham was hired temporarily in a part-time position.
“She’s willing to come in and help us with training, assisting with whatever needs assisting with because she knows all three jobs,” Purvis said.
The town is also advertising for the Town Hall deputy clerk position.
In other news, the town council recognized October as Emily Adkins Blood Clot Awareness Month. Adkins, the daughter of Nassau County Supervisor of Elections Janet Adkins and Doug Adkins, passed away Oct. 21, 2022 from a pulmonary embolism caused by a preventable blood clot that stemmed from a fractured ankle. She was 23 years old.
“When you lose a child, your life is completely shattered. (That is) probably the singular word to describe how people who lost a child felt. So, you know, from our perspective, Florida has acted,” Doug Adkins said. “You should be proud to be a citizen of the State of Florida. You should be proud to be a citizen of the Town of Hilliard, because this is where the patriots are. These are the people who have acted to defend your life and defend your liberty.”
In honor of Florida City Government Week, the council will host Muffins with the Mayor Thursday from 8-10 a.m. at Hilliard Town Hall. A mock town council meeting will be held Thursday night with elected Hilliard Elementary students sitting on the council. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
