Callahan residents will soon have permanent access to Verizon services in town. The Verizon Wireless site plan was approved Monday night by the Callahan Town Council. The company plans to transform the former Burger King into a store location, giving Callahan residents a closer store to serve them.
The cell service store will be located at 542370 U.S. 1.
The building’s structure will stay the same, with the interior redone. The building will be painted white to match other Verizon stores. Despite the renovations, the building’s overall footprint will remain the same, including the windows, doors, and parking lot. The council approved the site plan 5-0, allowing the company to begin renovations.
The council also appointed a new Callahan Planning and Zoning Board member, David Mellecker. The council was in search of a new board member after former member Paul Schwend resigned a few months back.
“It will be great to have Mr. Mellecker back with planning and zoning,” said Councilwoman Jacquelyn Fleming.
The council also approved the Florida Public Utilities agreement on the first reading of the item. According to Town Attorney Reba Pearce, this ordinance will grant a 30-year nonexclusive franchise to FPU, allowing it and its successors to construct, operate, and maintain gas infrastructure in Callahan. This includes the manufacture, transmission, distribution, and sale of natural, manufactured, or mixed gas.
Resolution 2025-R04 was also approved by the council. The resolution donates $2,800 for the 2025 Christmas Parade to the West Nassau Historical Society.
The next town council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 18.
