Smith commits in football & track
EJ Smith will join the football and track teams at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tenn.
The recent West Nassau High School graduate excelled at both sports, serving as kicker and punter for the Warrior football team and qualifying for the state track and field finals twice in the high jump.
The Callahan resident is the son of Eddie Smith and Allison Hartsfield and grew up with siblings Brady Porter and Sawyer Porter.
Smith will attend Carson-Newman on a dual sports scholarship and decide his major as he immerses himself in his education. He committed to the school May 17, after WNHS’ senior awards ceremony. He also answered a few questions for the Record.
Why did you choose Carson-Newman?
They are paying for my education.
What do you enjoy about playing sports?
I enjoy the challenge and the fear of the next game or meet.
What is your favorite part about the positions you play?
I stand alone.
What is your fondest memory of high school sports?
Making Coach Eric Hernandez trip on a soccer ball.
What other sports have you been involved in during high school?
Football, soccer and track
Who is your role model and why?
Coach Eric is my motivation, because he is the perfect man, husband and coach. He is the reason I am where I am today.
