Hursey joining UNF Ospreys in 2020
West Nassau High School senior Garrett Hursey will join the Ospreys at the University of North Florida next year. He signed his letter of intent Nov. 13, just prior to the start of the 2019-20 Warrior basketball season.
The shooting guard is in his only year at WNHS, having attended Providence School of Jacksonville, Trinity Christian and Episcopal School of Jacksonville before transferring for his senior year.
“It’s just close to home and it’s a good coach,” Hursey said of his decision.
He is the son of Jason and Julie Hursey of Callahan and brother of Haley Hursey. He plans to possibly enter a career in general contracting after college.
Prior to signing his commitment letter, he answered a few questions for the Record.
Why did you choose the University of North Florida?
It’s just been a school I’ve always wanted to go to. There was a few other schools, but UNF is the best.
What do you enjoy about playing basketball?
I enjoy competing and making 3-pointers.
What is your favorite part about the shooting guard position?
Being able to take over the game and be in control.
What is your fondest memory of high school sports?
At the UNF camp junior year, I put up eight threes a game.
What else have you been involved in?
I played baseball and football when I was younger, but I focused on basketball once I started high school.
Who is your role model and why?
My dad because he was always there for me and pushed me to be where I am now.
