• An abundance of wildlife, including alligators, greet visitors to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.

Okefenokee extends visitor center hours

With fall just around the corner and more comfortable weather for planning your next trip to the refuge, expanded hours of operation for the Richard S. Bolt Visitor Center at Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge are in effect.

The visitor center is open daily, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The refuge grounds, Okefenokee Adventures, water trails and Swamp Island Drive are open daily from 30 minutes before sunrise to 7:30 p.m. through Oct. 31. Beginning Nov. 1, the grounds will be open from 30 minutes before sunrise to 5:30 p.m. The refuge adjusts the hours of the grounds and the concession operation to align closely with daylight hours.

The Suwannee Canal Recreation Area is the Main Entrance to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and is the access point for the Suwannee Canal (day-use and overnight boating trails), the Swamp Island Drive, Richard S. Bolt Visitor Center and the concession operation, Okefenokee Adventures.

To confirm water trail conditions and any trail closures that may be in place, call the Richard S. Bolt Visitor Center at 912-496-7836 or Okefenokee Adventures at 912-496-7156. You can also visit www.fws.gov/refuge/okefenokee to plan a visit.
